Live vs Recorded First Dance: What Should You Choose?

One of the most common questions we get from couples is:
“Should we have our first dance song performed live, or play the original recording?”
And the answer is… it depends.
We actually do a pretty even split of both, and each option can work beautifully - it just comes down to the vibe you want and a few practical details.
Here are the main things to consider when deciding!
💃🏻 If You’re Doing a Choreographed Dance
If you’re planning a choreographed routine, we always recommend going with the recorded version.
Why?
Because that’s the version you’ll rehearse to (over and over again 😂), and you’ll get used to every tiny detail - the timing, the structure, the artists voice, the exact feel of the song.
Even the smallest difference in a live performance could throw you off, and that’s the last thing you want in that moment.
So in this case: Recorded = less stress, more confidence!
⏰ How Long Do You Want to Dance For?
Not every couple wants to sway for a full 3–4 minute song (fair enough)!
Some prefer a shorter, more relaxed moment, around a minute or so, then straight into the dance floor.
If that’s you (and you’re not doing choreography), a live acoustic version can be perfect.
We can adjust the structure and shorten the song naturally, then end it smoothly without it feeling cut off ✨
🎤 Your Ceremony Song Choices
When you book with us, we can learn up to 3 new songs for your day.
So your first dance choice can sometimes come down to how you want to use those.
For example:
If you’ve chosen 3 brand new songs for your ceremony, and your first dance song isn't already on our song list, go with the recorded version
If you’ve chosen songs we already know for most of your ceremony, we can absolutely learn your first dance and perform it live
It’s all about how you want to prioritise those moments!
👯 Other Formal Dances
If you’re including a parent or family dance, it’s worth thinking about how these moments flow together, and into the next moment (which is usually the first DJ song to open the dance floor)!
Keeping things consistent between live and recorded music can help everything feel really natural and seamless.
For example:
If your first special dance is to a recorded song, having your next one recorded as well can make the transition into the DJ set feel smooth and cohesive.
Whereas, if your first dance song is live acoustic, your next special dance can work beautifully either way: live or recorded, before flowing into that first big DJ dance floor track.

🎶 The Song Itself
Sometimes, couples are deeply attached to the original recording of the song: the artist’s voice, the production, the exact way it sounds. In that case, go with the original recorded version, for sure!
Other times, it’s more about the lyrics, the meaning and the message of the song, and in this case, a stripped-back live acoustic version can feel super intimate and special.
✨ The Energy Shift (Our Favourite Part)
One thing we absolutely love about a live first dance is what comes next.
There’s something really special (and fun!) about the impact when going from: 🎸 Live acoustic guitar + vocals Into:
💥 A full, high-energy DJ track, plus party lights!
That shift from intimate and emotional… to a packed dance floor going off… hits so well.
So… Which One Should You Choose?
Honestly? There’s no wrong answer!
Both options can create a beautiful, memorable moment - it just depends on what feels right for you.
If you’re not sure, we’re always happy to talk it through and help you decide based on your plans for the day!
